The Black Rhadley Walk – A Beautiful Walk from the Cabin
Distance: approx. 5km loop | Duration: 1–1.5 hours | Grade: Easy
This is our favourite walk from the cabin — and the one that gave Black Rhadley Cabin its name. A short loop with surprisingly big views, it’s perfect for stretching your legs after arriving or heading out first thing for a morning in the Shropshire Hills.
The walk begins straight from the cabin door. Follow the stony track down past the woodland and onto the quiet lane for a short distance, before turning left towards Nipstone Nature Reserve.
Passing through a few gates, the path begins to climb gently before turning right at the crest of the hill. From here it becomes a rockier trail, with Nipstone Rock appearing on your right. It’s well worth the short detour and scramble up onto the rocks for sweeping views across Corndon Hill and, on a clear day, towards the Welsh mountains beyond.
Continue along the trail with the Long Mynd visible to your left, passing another striking rocky outcrop known locally as The Rock. There’s something wonderfully wild and ancient about this part of the walk, with the Stiperstones landscape opening out around you.
The route then dips briefly back towards the quiet lane. Turn left and follow it downhill for a short distance before crossing the stile on your right at the bottom.
From here, the short climb to Black Rhadley Hill begins. It isn’t a long ascent, but the reward is a surprisingly wide, almost 360-degree view from the top. Even in summer, you can often have this little summit entirely to yourself.
Pause by the rocky trig point and take it all in. Depending on the season, there may be gorse or heather in flower, birds overhead and views stretching across the hills and valley towards the Linley Estate, with its magnificent old oaks.
From Black Rhadley, the path loops gently back down towards the lane and returns you to the cabin — just in time for a cup of tea, something cold on the deck, or perhaps a soak in the outdoor bath.
Enjoy!
